Discarded: Villa Aurelia, 2005
Series of 7 performative photographs
20.3 x 25.4 cm (8 x 10″)
I developed a difficult relationship with my feet at a young age, in part because it was challenging to find shoes that fit their long, narrow form. I discovered an old (ancient?) fragment of a statue behind a villa that was part of the American Academy in Rome, where I had a fellowship and was staying on the villa’s grounds in an apartment over a garage. I was drawn to what seemed like a randomly placed fragment of a sculpture, that looked like my feet in a general sort of way. It felt curiously positive and satisfying to photograph my feet and lower legs in relation to the statue fragment in various configurations. I exhibited this series in 2005 and in 2016.
